Did you delete the whole thing first, or just uploading into/over the top of old stuff?

Means you didn't upload all the files in Overwrite mode or you uploaded them in an incorrect location. When uploading files, your FTP client should complain about overwriting existing files. If it doesn't then there is a problem. Do not use web host provided control panels or tools like Dreamweaver to upload. Always use an FTP client. Most are free to use.

Download a copy of your includes/config.php file, and then delete all the vBulletin files/folders.

Once you've done that, upload a fresh copy of everything inside of the upload folder in the package you downloaded from the members' area. Do not mess with any permissions/chmodding.

should I rename the config.php.new or just delete it and use the old one?

              - - - Updated - - -

If I rename the config.php.new to config.php then I should modify to also, correct? or is it possible to use the old one?

You can use the old one. It will work fine. If you prefer, you can rename the new one to config.php and modify it appropriately.

Can you tell us how exactly your site is gone.

About the config.php the one you had will do fine. It is not necessary to rename config.php.new and re-add the db info.

P.s. Did you make a backup of the db btw before the upgrade?

No problem, but what did you do to correct the issue?

first I have contacted hostgator, they are wonderful. Pointed out that somehow some uploaded files are converted from php to .txt. Corrected that and re uploaded a copy of upload (renamed as forum) and ran the script.
                        it was my fault anyway...
But, I am so pleased because I have sorted it out with your help... and that is a wonderful thing...
