[Forum] trying to figure out AdSense

Hi,
I’m trying to figure out AdSense so I hope you don’t mind my asking a question or two.. (or three..)

My forum is about books and literature. I’d like to have ads that are aimed to this context in order to achieve a higher click-probability. Am I to do anything or is Google going to figure out everything by itself, magically?

What is the best explained vb-AdSense tutorial, out there?

I trully have a hard time to figure this out.

Ok, when I pick AdminCP > Advertising > Google AdSense > Low (for example), I see two kind of generic google ads that don’t look very nice. If I paste my code into “Below Navbar” I don’t see any change.

If I paste a half banner code into Header 2 it just won’t appear.

How does all this work, anyway?


( ps. as to my q in my first post, i understand now that google is going to know the forum context by itself )

adsense is controlled by google and the content of the adds should roughly match the content of your site. It sometimes takes a while for the adds to appear but if they do not, best to ask on the adsense forum.

Isn't it a thing for this vb forum here if i paste the adsense code in the "Header 2" adspot, in the AdminCP, and nothing appears in my forum?

( Maybe I am missing the obvious, but that'd be a different point.. )

it can take awhile for it to appear, it won't be instant, there-after sometimes when google can't deter what content ad's should be there, they'll put a random one in

Have you set the permissions for who can see the adds?

I'm not so sure I like the offered positions for the adds, either. I'd like to have an add below the first post of every thread..

DO NOT USE THIS "AdminCP > Advertising > Google AdSense > Low"

Add your banners yourself in your ad_location_ templates.

That way you have full control of what shows and what doesn't, you can also use conditions to show to who you want.

I'm not sure if there is an official guide from vbulletin, but this is a good overview of what you can do.

well.. looking over this it was written before the ad_location templates
so all the placements are ad_locations now, but the rest of the article should be helpful for you

I figured it out, eventually, picking up pieces of information here and there on the Web, together with the link you supplied.

I skipped the AdminCP > Advertising > AdSense, since it’s offering a very limited range of possibilities.

I pasted the code directly into the templates in order to have the ads the exact way I want them to show. Now I have one appearing under the navbar and a big square in every first post, for guests only. And a small one appearing in every last post, for members as well.

But it took me lots of time and frustration as I had to experiment a lot, clueless and blindly, mostly.

I think that a simple, well explained guide, with lots of illustrative examples, would be the thing, but who’s gonna make it.
