Any directory to the forum modules works

Here's a good one. I can't figure out why adding an extra directory to the calendar results in a URL that works. There is nothing in my .htaccess that would allow this nor does it make any logical sense.

    mysite.com/forums/ = root.

    mysite.com/junk/forums/ = 404 error
mysite.com/junk/forums/member.php?u=105918 = works as if the junk directory didn't exist
mysite.com/junk/forums/showthread.php?t=53005 = works as if the junk directory didn't exist

I've never seen this before and can't reproduce it on another forum I own on the same server that doesn't have an install using a "forums" subdirectory. I can change "junk" to any combination of letters and numbers and the URL still appears. Disabling hooks globally doesn't matter - it still works using vB 4.2.2 PL 1. Baffling.
