    [Forum] upgrade from antiquity

    Hi

I own/owned a copy of 3.6.4 that is on a server that has not been upgraded witrhy its software for a looong time. It runs php4 and MySQL 4.1.22 which are, I believe, no good to man nor beast when it comes to upgrading to vBulletin v4.

My question is, if I upgrade php and mySQL to latest stable versions so that I can, it turn, then upgrade to vBulletin v4, will it mess up the db etc., of the current site (which uses vBulletin 3.6.4)?

No, a upgrade of either wont effect the db, it would be best to backup your db, perform your upgrades of the server, then re-import your db, this will en turn update your db tables for you automatically.

If you do not re-import, your will need to update the tables manually, mysql should spit out a message after the upgrade for you to manually run the mysql_upgrade script from the cmd line.

        A couple of things here.

vBulletin 4.X will not run on PHP 4. The minimum PHP requirement is 5.2.6

vBulletin 4.X will not run on MySQL 4.1.22. The minimum MySQL requirement is 5.0.19.

vBulletin 3.8.4 and lower will not run on PHP 5.3.0 or higher.

        -------

I recommend the following course of action.

        1) Backup your database.

        2) Upgrade your 3.6.4 forums to 3.8.7 PL2

        3) Backup your database.

        4) Upgrade your MySQL installation to a later version. Maintain your same character set and collation as your current database.

        5) Upgrade your database as necessary (look at the MySQL documentation)

        6) Backup your database.

        7) Upgrade your PHP version.

        8) Upgrade to vBulletin 4.X.

        9) Backup your database.

          Hi Wayne

          Ain't I got fun!

If I were to backup the DB, upgrade the system to latest safe mySQL and PHP, then clean install VB4+ (latest) could the DB then be imported someway?

It isn't recommended. All your userids, postids, threadids, etc... would change. Internal links will probably not work correctly. Plus, You would lose all incoming links and your search engine ranking will probably drop.

Ongoing situation here. I am now in the process of converting as per Wayne's recommendations with one exception, after the upgrade to v3.8.7pl2, I am changing server. I now have the problem of moving the db but the size is defeating me. can you advise please?

Ask your new host if he will help you to import your database.

                    Hi

I eventually got everything in and running but there is just one (as far as I can tell) bug that is happening.

Any forum-type images or thumbnails etc., do not show up. When I run an update as in "Help Rebuild Custom Avatar Thumbnails" an error shows stating that an incorrect path was supplied. Needless to say that I have not changed paths of dir names on anything and all dirs with contents are there. I have also checked in the Style Var Editor and the paths are correct.

As it is very easy to confuse me, you can well imagine how close to me that the guys are with white-coats.

Can someone provide a cure please?
