I just did a test post as a user rather than admin and the user doesn't get a message that their post has to be moderated. Is there any way to tell them that their post is awaiting moderation?
Also is there a way to email them and let them know once their post has been approved?

Yeah, Andy's right on. You don't want to spend your time moderating posts. You need to stop them at the gate.Comment
