[Forum] Which .htaccess to edit?

I want to edit the .htaccess file for my running forum. The forum resides in /public_html/v4/forums

I found .htaccess files in all of those directories:

• /public_html
• /public_html/v4
• /public_html/v4/forums

Not sure if it matters but when I type mydomain.com it loads the file index.php in the public_html folder.
The index.php file has this in it: define('VB_RELATIVE_PATH', 'v4/forums');

Which one do I need to edit for my running forum?
