Just Started Receiving Tons of Spam Registrations

I have recently been getting 10-20 spam registrations a day.

Prior to that i would get 1-2 month.

Here are my measures.

1. Spam-o-matic installed
2. 5 Random questions
3. Email verification

I have a mod that requires users PM's to be read before the can post so I'm not getting any spam posts. But the high level of registrations is driving me nuts.

This usually means your site is in Search Engines now. Don't allow them to complete the registration if they fail Spam-O-Matic's checks.

Are they answering the 5 random questions correctly too? Or it stops at that and those are just the attempts? I am playing with vb5 for a site I am going to launch, and am interested. on IPB I do not have issues with this with just email verification, captcha and question answer (specific to forum niche), simple state question.

Yes they are getting the answers correct and actually becoming members.

Sounds like it is time for new and better questions for Q&A.

Avoid any questions with common answers like a number or a color.

Mine has been in the search engines for years, and just in the last two weeks have spambots started answering the very unique question acurately. They are all from .vn emails (Vietnam).

I change to another unique question, and withing two days they start again.

Could only mean they have paid people to look at and answer the questions, and put those answers in a database.

Any way around this?

Well, since I made that last post, and changed the reg question to another unique one, and blocked *.vn emails, I have 4 more spam reg's.

Is it possible my reg question is broken, or they have found a loophole?

Make sure you are running the latest version of the software, 4.2.1.

Consider disabling all 3rd party mods, including VBSEO if you have it, in case it is an exploit in a mod.

No mods installed at all.

I just turned on reg mod, and all attempts at reg have stopped. Seems as though they know reg mod is on before even trying.

I personally use Spam-O-matic and have 20 different Q&A which are a little bit harder to figure out, I'm getting zero spam due to that.
