With modern search engines, both styles of links have the same number of keywords in them and would give pretty much the same benefit. The key benefit of mod_rewrite URLs is that the url is cleaner overall.

Why does vbulletin.com use friendly URL's instead of mod_rewrite URL's?

      Thanks,
      Marc

If mod_rewrite URL's are used, can this pose any problems when upgrading vBulletin over using friendly URL's ?

I'd suggest using the standard url's
            but that's just me

Upgrading is the same regardless of the URLs you use. The difference is that if you change you're URL structure, the search engines will take a while to show those new URLs across all pages. However your old vBulletin URLs should still work.
