    [Forum] Settings for "Whats new"

I am running VB 4.1.3 and i wondered, is there a way to play with the "whats new" settings?

The threads dont seem to stay in the " whats new" section very long, if i have or havent read them. Can i change the length of time they appear in the "whats new" bit?

    thanks xx

The setting you may change that affects it is at AdminCP > Settings > Options > general settings > Thread/Forum Read Marking Type

This option controls how threads and forums are marked as read.
      1. Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the session timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.

This option is how all versions of vBulletin before 3.5 functioned.
      2. Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum.

This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.
      3. Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.

This is the most usable option for end users, but most processor intensive.

Please don't PM or VM me for support - I only help out in the threads.

To expand on what Lynne posted, if you're using one of the database forum marking options, increase/change the Database Read Marking Limit to whatever you wish the limit to be. We have ours set to 14 days.

                  What does vBulletin.com use?
It's annoying (or a bug) that I'll reply to this thread and hit what's new, and this thread will show up again.

How about what's new of stuff I haven't seen yet? Seems logical to me but who am I to say...

When I reply to a thread here on vb.com and then click What's New, I don't see the thread I just replied to.

I guess I'm actually clicking "new post" which has always (at least for several months) shown the reply I just made or one I've made in the last 5-10 mins..

                      very annoying IMO

seeing how they both point to the same link (a bit redundant don't you think), both do in fact show my last reply

It's ridiculous to have this type of duplication. It's confusing to everyone.

I agree, which is why I cleaned my "What's New" up.

I went further and did away with that annoying concept of the second navbar changing the links depending on which tab you were on.

My second navbar is now identical wherever you are.

If what's new actually worked correctly it might be ok, but it doesn't. If it worked correctly there would be no duplication.

However they have clearly decided NOT to build it correctly since two years on it remains broken. They should actually remove it completely and then revert to a static second navbar.

As it stands we have half a job, if that.

                              yup
I just replied to two threads and both show in my "what's new" or "new post" or "get new" whatever you want to call it, button.

this post shows as new to me even tho I'm clearly the last poster and I posted a few mins ago

also this reply here in this thread doesn't show on my profile as "my post"

Very annoying and frustrating when sometimes vb works as it should, but most the time it doesn't..
