I have a thread going on in the vB5 Connect forum, and have pretty much decided from the feedback there that it's a no-go at this point. I've been out of the game for some years now and was wondering if 4.2 is stable and reliable. Does it have functionality that makes it better than 3.8 (the latest version I can download on my license)? I guess what I'm asking for is if it's worth it to pay $250 to get 4.2 when I already have 3.8?

4.2 is certainly stable and there are new features over and above 3.8.
So it's worth it in that regard.
What you need to look at, is how your existing site runs. Is it default, or does it have many modifications, or a custom style? Because if it does, these need to e converted to work with vB4.
There's no simple answer to it. Possibly a link to your site would help us provide more specific advice, though ultimately the decision would be one for you to weigh up.MARK.B

I'm starting up again from scratch, so there's no converting. I'm just looking for some general opinions on how much "better" 4.2 is than 3.8. I like bells & whistles and am willing to pay for them, but only if they work.Comment

Your license only gives you access to 3.8.5- only 3.8.7 is supported with security updates and may see additional updates for newer PHP versions. So you need to upgrade either way, it would be a very bad idea to start a forum on a version with known security exploits- which is any 3.x version below 3.8.7.
Personally I think yes 4.x is better than 3.x because it has all 3.x features + blogs + articles. Simple enough.

If you're starting from scratch 4.2.1 is a no-brainer. I am still maintaining some busy forums on 3.8.7 and am struggling with whether to upgrade, but for starting a new site? 4.2.1 without question. Hell, for a brand new site I would very seriously consider 5.Comment
