[Forum] Vbulletin Search is Critically broken 4.0.4

Sorry guys to harp on a dead whale (BP sick humor), but I'm building a new website and search functionality is going to be a major part of the paradigm......

Search is, quite simply broken, and needs to be fixed in 4.0.5 right now!

    Here is the current FU.
    • Click on advanced search. The default tab is multi content. I don't like it but whatever...
    • for the search term, input the word - tracker
    • for the user, input the vbulletin employee - Zachery
    • Click on search now
    Here is a screen shot

    And here is the result

Huh? Zach has had multiple posts about the tracker! WTF?

Let's try it a different way!
    • Click on advanced search. The default tab is multi content. I don't like it but whatever...
    • for the search term, input the word - tracker
    • for the user, input the vbulletin employee - Zachery
    • Click on All Types
    • Click on search now
    Same fraking result

Size:	56.5 KB

BUT if you click on the (not default) search tab (you know, the one that is first, and looks like it is the default, but isn't for some strange, only the programmers know, reason...., and the one you cannot visually tell is not the default,)
    • Click on advanced search
    • Click on search single content type
    • Type in the word - tracker
    • Type in the user - Zachery
    • Click on search now

You get the following 91 results

This behavior is unacceptable and a show stopping bug.

And no, I will NOT file a bug report. Do it yourself, vbulletin.

There are sadly dozens (Hundreds?) of threads about this. I've had this same frusturation since the Gold release: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...ts-on-my-forum.

This is honestly my biggest pet peeve with the 4.x series. The search results are completely worthless.
Vote for these items in the tracker: Image Watermarking ----- Search Algorithm Sucks ----- Drop Main CSS section from style manager ------ Simplify process to accept pending group join requests ------ Add option to publish to the wall of a "Fan Page" in addition to the user's personal FB wall. ------ CMS Should physically resize images into thumbnails and not scale via CSS

Shoot we can all vote for a change on a the search engine, CSS problems, etc... But I don't think it makes a difference really... JMO

Because if this is a known bug for the last 6 months and nothing has been done to fix it do you really think voting for a bug is going to change that?

I think there are hundreds of bugs that get burried in the tracker because they only get marked as confirmed, and then forgotten about. People have to complain in numbers for VB to notice, and then normally once the threshold has been reached lately they are doing pretty good about fixing it.

Well if you follow this link... http://tracker.vbulletin.com/browse/...arissues-panel

You will see the "most voted on bugs", and yet 70% of the top 10 haven't been assigned to anyone......

              Message: Vbulletin doesn't care.

Vbulletin wants every person to submit a bug when they find one, yet with over 837 already reported search bugs, every user is supposed to read each bug report to see if it is already there? That is mighty fine bull- oney they are serving there.

There are 837 VB4 search bugs reported. If each bug was counted as one vote, I surmise that it is the buggiest, most requested fix, yet silence from VB.

              Message: Vbulletin doesn't care.

When you try to have results returned by posts, which is ONLY available in the single content type mode, like below.........

You get this intellectually damaging result. Every time I see it and try to figure it out, I lose 3 IQ points.... Who, in their right mind, would want this as a result to preseent to users?

I spent a few hours going through pages and pages of the search bugs listed in the tracker, and the results were many, with the feedback from VB few.

So there are serious technical problems with search results as I've suspected... Yikes.

I'll just add a tidbit about the interface. Most of the time I find it remarkably difficult to figure out whether my search parameters are set properly too. A tag cloud is prioritized before these things?

Is this fixed? I'm still using 4.0.4. I've reported this issue here:

I have a user with over 100 posts and only 8 show up when clicking the "Find all post" for his user profile.

Did you try rebuilding the search index as the comment asked?

did you rebuild search index after upgrade?
I had this same problem which easily resolved after a rebuild.

Just as an update, I just rebuilt my search on the test site and I am now able to find all the posts that I had made so I would say 'yes' it is fixed.

I did rebuild the search - regardless, this new user has only been on the site for a few days and I've been on vb4.x for many months, so that won't make any difference anyway, as the posts should have been indexed. I'll upgrade to 4.0.9 when it is out and do a rebuild then.
