Bandwidth increased over 200% with vbulletin 4

Yeah, that's right... I went from .7 mb to over 1.7 mb of 95th percentile daily average bandwidth transfer.

So, everything in my forum works at turtle speed, since my hosting provider gave me a 1mb transfer peak.


I've tried to optimize ANYTHING, but still can't make it go under 1.5 mb :S


So... why? I'm the only one with this issue?

I'd be very interested to hear if you can figure out why this is. vB4 should serve considerably less HTML than vB3. Maybe it serves more scripts/styles/images? Are your caching headers set correctly for static content?

Do you still have GZIP turned on? Are you storing CSS as files?

Check phpinfo.php url to see if you have mod_gzip (Apache 1.3.x) or mod_deflate (Apache 2.x) loaded/installed (on phpinfo.php url page in browser you can do CTRL+F to bring up find prompt and type in mod_gzip or mod_deflate to quickly see). If you have either mod_gzip or mod_deflate loaded, then ensure vB admincp gzip compression is disabled since it's the same thing as mod_gzip or mod_deflate and double compression will just increase cpu loads. If you don't have mod_gzip or mod_deflate installed, then DO NOT set vB admincp gzip compression to a level higher than 1. Higher than 1, will only increase cpu loads unncessarily.

Is this right? I have mod_deflate, should I set "GZIP Compression Level" to 0?

Cache headers for img's, js and css files are ok (I'm using Yslow for monitoring these files).

Regarding gzip, our hosting providers told us that enabling it will raise CPU capacity (is this correct?). Anyway, if gzip is the problem we didn't touch it from vb3 to vb4 so it should not be.

Enabling gzip will save a lot of bandwidth, and will not increase CPU usage appreciably, if you use low compression levels.
