I begain testing on my dev site the day the beta went public.
I spent some time fixing the style, updating the mods (and deleting the ones that I didn't need)
I let my users choose which mods would delay the upgrade if they weren't available.
I upgraded my site the day after Gold was released.
So far, apart from one IE6 user (upgraded now) the upgrade was a success.
Sure it was hard work, and still is - getting to know new software takes time. Most of my problems are caused by not knowing where an option is, or what an option does. But it's nowhere near as bad as when I first installed vB and had to start from scratch.
I must just be luckyComment

S1OPP, Question for you because I haven't live tranferred my site yet. After you tested this all out, what was your process for tranferring your live site over or did you redo everything?
I made an exact bopy of my site files and database to work with. After I get everything the way I want it, I'm trying to figure out how I'll reimport the real database that's still linked to 3.8. Any suggestions?Comment

With all due respect, your style isn't that customized. Some of us have lost wonderful skins that we're trying to recreate. The main problems with the upgrade seem to revolve around styling issues. I think VB failed there. They did a great job on features but on skins, really bad.Comment

Yes- it is completely MY fault that this software sucks *rolleyes*
Unless someone is an expert programmer and knows how to re-write code and templates then it's not user friendly.
There are several features that are gone without any promise of coming back unless I want to dick around with the code (which vbulletin will NOT support if I screw it up).
They sold us a bogus upgrade and the questions/issues/complaints in this forum is a clear indication of that.Comment

vb4 has a lot to like but more issues to hate right now. If I'd installed it in a trial db I would never have upgraded... But I did and I have to live with it. It's not terrible but there are a crap load of little issues that are annoying and it feels VERY beta (but they charged us $250 for the CMS license???)... What's more annoying is the lack of support. You ask questions and they either get ignored in here, answered by other users, or when vB members "grace" your thread with their presence, it seems they like to ignore what you said and give you links you've likely read w/o saying anything else. OR they'll give you advice saying "did you change this setting" w/o saying what to change it to, or linking a thread. So they're just NOT helpful at all...
2 examples would be my thread on stylevars last night. I asked specific questions that were NOT in the .PDFs we've all been through. a team member came in and linked those threads. REALLY? After I said I'd read through them and these specific vars were NOT in them? Thanks for the help... Then today a vB member said in the cookie issue thread "did you change XYZ setting?" w/o a link or what it should be changed TO or WHERE to change it. Great guys, thanks for .1seconds of your time. Hopefully this means they're very busy with fixed.
I will like vb4 once it's fixed. It's OK now, it's just frustrating to feel like I have to chase down most of these issues myself.Comment

FTP the files down from the live site and FTP everything up to the test site.
Update config.php and the change a few options in AdminCP.
From that point you have a exact copy to work with. (just make sure it's not open to public access)
My old vB3 site did have quite a lot of style modifications, so many that each upgrade (and there have been a few over the past 4 years) that needed templates reverting broke the skin anyway.
I took the oportunity with the vB4 upgrade to remove a lot of the 'add ons' that were never used or not really needed and drop back to a simpler style. The ones that I needed to keep, I ported myself.
I do remember the 'good old days' when the stock response from vB.com, if you were having problems and had a modified style, was that they don't support modified code. Even a simple template change. At least they do seem to be more open to mods, and are providing a much better platform to do it with.
You're quite right, the majority of issues seem to revolve around styling, if you think about that from IB's perspective, trying to release a product that was an upgrade from v3, when people had spent years developing skins was always going to be a massive task.
If you checked out this forum, on the day the RC was being release, everybody was going crazy, comparing timezones and shooting IB down because they said Monday an it was already Tuesday in New Zealand - Now the forums are flooded with people that are claiming it's FAIL because they released it too soon. IB can't win in position they have put themselves in.
Perhaps, I am lucky, lucky that my users have seen the upgrade to vB4 as a refreshing change, they are certainly enjoying the new features, and lucky that they haven't compared the 'stock' skin to any other vB4 forums (because there aren't that many yet)Last edited by S1OPP; Sat 2 Jan '10, 4:44pm.Comment

I have posted about 10 threads in 2 days:
Software is no longer compatible with Blackberries and other cell phones
Software is not remembering log in info
Double Click required to Reply or Reply with quote (bug)
you can't click on "replies" to see who posted how many times, or what they posted anymore
Can no longer have a Moderator Column
or the name of the Forum in a separate Column when searching New Posts
Can no longer see how many threads are in a New Posts search (just number of pages)
Announcements are not working (bug)
You can no longer see when you last logged in
You can no longer search "find all threads started by" unless you go through advanced search.
(which still isn't working and re-indexing the search crashed our forum last night and we were down for about 10 hours.
Our host couldn't kill the job and we had to use a back up from last Friday.
and that is just off the top of my head....Comment

Im not saying you are one of those people but unless you have done something wrong I really can't see that your version of 4.0 would be any different from mine.Comment

I have to agree with bigwater and S1OPP. You have to hunker down on that keyboard and stay focused on the task at hand. Yeah it's totally different but so was that new car you bought when you traded in your clunker. It took some time to learn what all the buttons and knobs do.
Same here. I have to admit I have been using the F-word a lot lately when playing with my test site, but I love a challenge. The learning curve is steep but I'm on top of it, jumping up and down, trying to flatten it out. Like for example, today I made a change to a text color that apparently is forum wide in its effect. My text that was normally black, is now white and unreadable. Thankfully I'm working off a copy and can go to the stylevar listing in the default and see what things are in the default mode. That makes fixing things a snap.
Set up a test site then make a working copy. Don't touch the default copy. How much more simple can you make it? Go down the stylevar list and use the color picker to pick an offbeat color. Save that then go look in the forums, blogs, and CMS to find what it affects. That's the quick route I'm taking. I find out what it does then I put it like I want it and save the setting. Then on to the next item on the list.
My baby is nowhere near ready for primetime but with determination, I will learn the in's and out's and get her ready....Comment

I have used firebug to work out most of the issues I have encountered. The second skin I created I threw together in a couple of hours. The only issue I have is remembering the different variables. Would be great to have an extensive list.
I think the main issue with all the complaints is the fact it has changed so much, its like a completely new product. People don't like change.Comment
