Just biding my time. Playing with the pencils on the group W bench. I'll upgrade when I'm ready, not just because a new release comes out. Evaluate the advantages and the pitfalls, and make your decisions from there.Anybody who says "it can't be done" will usually be interrupted by somebody who is already doing it.Comment

I don't regret upgrading, but I have to admit the frustration level broke me for a couple of days there. It wasn't a big problem, no databases lost or anything, just a bunch of small bugs that I'm working around.Comment

So I upgraded and went from an almost bug free 3.8 to a very buggy (not breaking the site) 4.0 MOST of the bugs in 4.0 are things that should have been caught and I believe they won't because of higher ups push to get 4.0 released.
Had they held out and waited until the end of January to release it with the bug fixes they already had done, plus the ones they have done since releasing Gold I would bet everyone's opinion would have been closer to Ahhh...
You never get a second chance to make a first impression and with the 'quick to release date' of before Christmas, the VB Team missed the Ahhhh moment.Comment

im with ya, my community is decent sized.. not small, but not huge.
Im doing all my testing and everything on on my test site (novel concept i know)
once i have all the issues worked out and the layout and everything working how i want, i will then do my production site.
im still shocked tho, if more people did there testing on a test site i think they would have MUCH less headache since things wouldn't be such an emergencyComment

Why even post here? It has nothing to do with troubleshooting.

I am waiting for project tools to become available,
Kinda of strange that VB is using project tools on their 4.0 site, but it is not available for those of us who use it to down load.Comment

I did a test upgrade leaving my forum intact on 3.8. Frankly I regret even doing a test upgrade because I spent ALL my holiday vacation pulling out my hair just trying to restyle it.
I know there's a StyleVars dictionary out there and it's a bit helpful but not as helpful as VBulletin makes it out to be. Excuse me while I vent but it was iresponsible to put this out without even a manual for it.
What many of us need is a detailed manual and a detailed explanation for the style vars. I'm not a programmer but would it have been THAT difficult to program a conversion tool for our old skins? VB knows exactly what should correlate to what, why are customers each having to reinvent the wheel on this one.
Would it be THAT difficult for a member of the VB team to have started a no-response thread going through each style vars, one at a time, with a screen shot of what it controlled and clear instructions on how to fix the style vars that aren't working, such as the navblock for the usercp?
I'm frustrated and really wish I had waited before paying hard cold cash this early.
Sorry VB, I love your products & love the new features; I have no plans to switch to a different software but I expected a totally different experience upgrading. A little more time on your part, instead of this rush to release, would have saved so many man hours of grief on your customers' part. Forgive the suggestion, but I think you should consider a partial rebate as compensation for all this unnecessary customer grief.Last edited by chloe; Sat 2 Jan '10, 1:48pm.Comment
