[CMS] How do you program a widget ?

Hi

I want to write a Event Calendar Widget , which i can also give to others. How do i go about doing this.

I saw the article on writing widgets,but its quite old. And on Gold edition it does not help.

Can someone guide me to a resource on how to start.
