  • Upgrading up from 4.2.0 on a server with PHP version 5.3.29

    Hi there,

I'm having some issues trying to transfer a forum to another server. Currently running vBulletin 4.2.0 on a server with PHP 5.3.29 and wanting to move it to a server with PHP 5.4.24.

I was thinking of upgrading the forum on my current server first but I've seen that anything above my current version requires a higher version of PHP.

So my question is - how do I go about doing this? Will upgrading my forum crash it completely? or should I try to upgrade my PHP first to a version that supports the upgrade?

    Any help would be appreciated

A server running PHP 5.4 shouldn't be considered secure at this point in time. Please upgrade your PHP to 7.1 and upgrade vBulletin to 4.2.5.
    1. You will want to take your forums offline.
    2. Upgrade PHP to 7.1 (this will break your currently offline forums)
    3. Create a database backup
    4. Upgrade vBulletin to 4.2.5
    5. Create a database backup
    6. Turn your forums on.

Hello, is there a way I can get into the steps on how to update this myself? i.e. how to take forums offline, host will upgrade php, how to create database back up, how to upgrade to 4.2.5, how to create backup again, and turn forums back on.
        Thank you.

You can turn your forums on or off in the AdminCP under Settings -> Options -> Turn your forums On/Off
Ask your hosting provider for the best method to create a database backup on their systems. If you're using cPanel, it is done by clicking the Backup icon within cPanel.
