Still holding off on 5 Connect

I don't have a ton of modifications to my forum running VB 4.2.4. I've been holding off on upgrading to 5 Connect. It's been out for awhile now, so I'm wondering if it's worth getting or keeping with what I have. They say, if it's not broke, don't fix it!

Just curious what others think who DID make the change.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

What isn't working properly in vB4 that means you need to upgrade?
What features in vB5 do you need that aren't in vB4?
What is the actual reason you are considering an upgrade?

Because you do need compelling reasons beyond "to get the latest shiny new version", which is actually why a lot of people do it..

Arbitarily deploying a major upgrade (or indeed switching platforms) without good reason can and does completely kill existing sites. Users are generally resistant to change so if there's no associated benefit, many of them will leave.

vB5 is also a completely different product to vB4. It will be pretty much exactly like this very support forum. All custom styles and addons will also be lost. You keep your content and members, (and user passwords) but pretty much nothing else. It is very similar to switching platforms.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it...just that you need to have clear reasons why.

Mark.B Thank you for your response.

There isn't anything not working in vB4.
One vB5 function I like is the User feature that show the predictive user name list.
It appears that vB5 has the "Like" feature built into it without used a modification, also the User feature?
I'm considering an upgrade if it's worth upgrading to. I don't want to risk my forum just for a feature or two.

I assumed I would have to customize the forum again after switching. As you stated, members don't like major change. I agree
I'm asking as to not get caught up in the "latest shiny new version". That does make me curious.

Appreciate your feedback and great points.

The features you mention are certainly valid reasons.

I would recommend setting up a private test mirror of your live site, with a copy of your database. Upgrade that and see what you think.
