FAQ: How to install CMS in Root, Forums in subdirectory (up to 4.1.0 only)

So does the method shown in post #1 of this thread still work for vB 4.1.7?

I'd love someone to actually show me how to make a default 4.1.7 system work with CMS at the top/root of the domain. Neither the "old" way of doing it, nor the instructions, work on my system. I haven't even modified the system at this point, so this is the default template/style, no add-ons or plug-ins. Nothing. I can get the CMS to run in the root, but i get the problem with the popup window. Constantly.

And for the previous post: The method in the first post is inaccurate, as there is no such thing as "CMS Site URL" to populate and it says to leave one thing blank, which is not allowed. So no, it does not "work" even though it sort of works.

Frustrating.

I'm starting a new forum (tbmotoring.ca) with a fresh copy of vB 4.1.7 . I would like install the CMS in Root and Forums in a subdirectory so my home page is the CMS and my URL's are like this:

http://www.tbmotoring.ca (CMS)


http://www.tbmotoring.ca/forum/forum.php (FORUM)

I have already created a new folder in '/home/sitename/public_html' called 'forum'

Should I upload the vB Suite files to '/home/sitename/public_html/forums/' or do I do it a different way? What other steps are required?

I submitted a trouble ticket and got this response back:

Hi Marc.

What I'd recommend is:

- upload all files to your root directory and run the installer
- then upload the contents of the 'do_not_upload/forum' directory in the ZIP file to the 'forums' folder on your server
- update the URLs in AdminCP > Settings > Options > Site Name / URL / Contact Details

You should be fine after this.

I uploaded all of the contents of the upload folder (not the folder itself) to my root directory '/home/myhostaccount/public_html' and everything seems to be working fine. My URL's now look like this:

http://www.tbmotoring.ca/forum.php (FORUM)

http://www.tbmotoring.ca/blog.php (BLOG)

http://www.tbmotoring.ca/content.php (CMS)

When I type www.tbmotoring.ca into my browser it brings me to the HOME aka http://www.tbmotoring.ca/content.php

I did not upload any of the do_not_upload files or change anything in the AdminCP this is just a fresh instal of 4.1.7

This works fine for me.

Then again, I guess I'm not using a subdirectory.

The suggestion to put everything at the "top" or root of the site, and move the forums (rather than install to /forums and move the CMS to the top) worked for me, and got rid of the popup.

I really don't understand this. Can I clarify this?

the "contents" in the upload folder should be uploaded to the host server/public html/
the "4 folders": blog, cms, forum, rewrite to be uploaded into the host server/public html/forum

am i doing this right?

I had already uploaded my forum and the structure was:

www.*****.com/forum/forums etc

I moved everything to the root directory on the server using ftp and everything seems to be working correctly so far...hopefully I haven't wrecked anything else.


The structure now:

www.****.com/forum
www.****.com/blog
www.****.com/content (also on home page - www.****.com which was set in admin cp)

Do I have to change anything for 4.1.11 when upgrading from 4.1.9? I have the op's method of installation.
