I've gotten so tired of spambots on my small, informational forum (3.8.9 beta 3), that I'm trying to just do away with user registration altogether. (There has been a HUGE increase in fake registrations from gmail addresses in the past few days.) I flipped around between reCaptcha and question and answer verification, but neither seems to have much effect. I'm not comfortable trying to install one of the mods that seem to be available. So I've disabled new registrations, announced on the home page that registrations need to be done manually via the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page, and then configured the FAQs to reflect the process. I've entered my valid email address as the webmaster. After I logged out of the forum and re-opened it, the "Register" link is gone (as expected) but when I click on "Contact us" I get the dialog page, fill it out (with a different email address) and submit it, getting a confirmation that it's been sent. However, I do not get an email in response on my email account that I entered as webmaster, even after waiting for an hour or two.
I can't figure out what the problem is, or even if this is a valid way of going about it, but I'd much rather get an email ever few days and register them manually than have to patrol the site on a daily basis deleting scum from the attempted registrations. I want to avoid having people view my email address, otherwise I could just list that in the opening category description.
