    vB 3.8.7 Average Server Load?

I am guessing it would depend on the size of your forum (members, posts, activity, etc) but what should the average server load be for a vB forum?

I only have like 185k posts and usually around 8 members on at a time.

Server load has been averaging around 15 or more and my host said he should be like 4-8 (whatever that means).

How can I get this number down?

There's no ideal figure but that sounds too high.

Do you have any modifications installed?

I do but I have always had modifications and they have never caused a problem until now.... I don't know why all of a sudden they would be an issue.

There could be multiple actors involved.

I wouldn't start by turning all the modifications off and see if it improves matters.

If not, look at activity on your forum. Are you busier than usual? Even if it seems not, look at the number of guests, you could be being hit by bots or even a DDoS attack.

Beyond that, I would refer it back to your host. They need to tell you why they think it is so high. If they really thought it was being caused by your site, they'd likely have taken action by now, especially if its shared hosting.

I just noticed in my Admin CP that it says "Server Load Averages" with 3 sets of numbers 4.12, 6.24, 8.31 (as an example)

(I am on a shared server)
So my question is this, those #'s that are listed in my vB Admin CP, are those load averages that MY forum is putting on the server or is it the load average for the entire server.

If it is shared hosting, then it is normally for the whole server.

It not only depends on your forum stats, but also the plugins you're using and the host you've chosen.
Ideally your load shouldn't be above 2, and really anything below 1 is ideal.

Remember though, unless you're paying for a vps, or a dedicated server, that data is shared between the entire server. While a load of 1-4 is ideal (depending on the number of processors, AND how the system displays the server load), its not going to happen often with many shared hosting providers. All too often I see customers sites with loads far above 8 and 10, constantly, never changing.

Don't put too much stock into the numbers, there isn't much you can do to change them yourself.

Thanks for the answers guys. Really appreciate them.

Although my forum is going on 6 years now (wow) what settings can I adjust to make sure my forum is running the absolute best, quickest, and smoothest it can?

Here are some good tips for a 3.8 forum (actually this may have been written for 3.5 but most apply to 3.8)
