    They mean your MySQL Server shut down the connection before a result was returned from a query. There isn't really enough information provided to find a fix. More diagnostics would need to be done. The first thing that you should do is upgrade to vBulletin 3.8.8 to make sure it isn't a bug within the software.

      Here are some more recent ones, with a screenshot of the frequency I get them below. Do you still recommend to upgrade to vB 3.8.8, or can my webhost (hostgator) or vBulletin do something about this? If not, how much will upgrading to 3.8.8 cost?

        You need to talk to your host about the error. Most likely they have the wait_timeout set very low for mysql and that is causing the problem (default is 28800).
