How do I add a custom hook in the navbar?

There's a mod I installed that uses the $template_hook[navbar_buttons_right] hook. I would like to add a custom hook called $template_hook[navbar_buttons_first] and place it in the navbar coding and change the mod's coding so that the link it creates is first in line.

I tried just adding $template_hook[navbar_buttons_first] to the navbar and making the change to the mod but it doesn't appear.

Do I need to add something else?

You should see if there is a vBulletin 4.X version of the addon that uses the new variable structure and existing template hooks in the navbar template.
