I run a niche forum where the calendar is a very important feature. The Upcoming Events feature normally found in the What's Going On box at the bottom of forum home can get quite large, even when the days limit is set to only 45 days. But because of the importance of planning and scheduling these events, I have increased the day option to 180. I noticed an immediate delay in page load for the forum home page.
What can I do to improve the page load time. I actually removed the display of the events on forum home by commenting it out in the template, but I do have a link to a new custom page that the events appear on. This page also is slow to load. All pages that do not have the Upcoming Events feature load pretty quickly, so it isn't an overall server load problem.
I'm on a VPS, so I do have access to features that a standard shared hosting account doesn't. If I can modify settings to improve the response, please suggest them.

Thanks for any advice.
