Noob question: If a thread is deleted, should a link to it lead to a 404 error, or...

..."Thread not specified" error? I'm just trying to figure out why I have crawl errors that haven't cleared out in Webmaster tools for 5-6 months.

Everything I thought I knew is about this is getting a little foggy.

Does a "thread not specified" error return a 404? Or should I be seeing a 404 page?

Please... If this sounds like a stupid question to you, move on to the next thread. I really don't need snarky answers right now.

I've been trying to fix this problem for a while and have done plenty of searching around.

It should throw a 'No thread specified' message like this:

    Code:
No Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator
    To be updated...
