      Unknown MySQL server host 'mysql50-38.wc1'

This is a MySQL error, and you should contact your hosting provider.

          They are not much help. They keep asking "what is on line 311 of core_class.php" which is this : $link = $this->functions[$usepconnect ? 'pconnect' : 'connect']("$servername:$port", $username, $password);

Make sure config.php has value 0 for persistent connections.
The error is still with MySQL server, vB is just reporting that it's unknown and therefor can't continue. Sorry that you have a poor quality hosting provider.

              This is our conversation.

Ryan D.: The best recommendation I can make would be for you to upload a phpinfo file.
Ryan D.: Then when you see the issue occur again hit that phpinfo page.
Ryan D.: The first line is the system line
Ryan D.: This is the line we will need so that we can determine the node to check the error logs for to see if there is anything in those logs.
brett: I just got another error again 734pm
Ryan D.: So you are just looking at your error logs not actually seeing the issue?
brett: ya, it sends me an error log
              brett: vbulletin does
Ryan D.: I see. That could be problematic.
brett: isnt rackspace suppose to have an error log though?
Ryan D.: The method I suggested will only work if you can replicate the issue.
brett: It cant be replicated cuz some days it doesnt do it, some days it does
Ryan D.: Yes but your error logging is breaking it.
Ryan D.: More to the point if it happens randomly we won't know what node is occurred on unless we can replicate it on the node and then check that node specifically.

What if I just re upload that php file? Would that possibly stop these errors? Today alone I have 4 errors every hour so far.

Get a new host, yours sucks

IF they can't troubleshoot their own servers or tell what mysql server you are using then they have no business in the hosting business.

I need to do something, this is getting to be pathetic. From 2:49pm - 4:04pm I got 39 of these errors in my inbox. Every time I hit the refresh button I'm getting more and more!!!

It means that your server is unable to resolve 'mysql50-38.wc1' to an address in order to connect to the mysql database. I take it your database on another server - it would be better to get the ip address of that server and put that in your config file.

I just got finished with their tech support. They had one of their admins look into the problem and found what could be causing the issue. I use rackspace for my hosting, btw. They said there was some connection issues with the database center in DFW which is ALL the time it seems. So I can only hope it is resolved.
