Yeah, you could delete the text for the one message in phpMyAdmin (I know you'd need to do something in the pmtext table, but not sure about exactly what to do in the others - the count will be off if you only delete it in the pmtext table), however, if the user asked for emails to be sent telling him about PMs, the PM text will be in there already.

Message arrived to the user: "Don't ever visit my forum again!"
Replace it with: "Error 12345678"
however, if the user asked for emails to be sent telling him about PMs, the PM text will be in there already.
(Provided there isn't a hack which prevents sending the text in the email
