Downloaded 3.8 version not running, still 3.7.4

I followed the steps to upgrade from 3.7 to 3.8, changing the upload file name to "forumvB" and uploading it to that directory. I uploaded the install file to the same directory.

Loging into the .../install/upgrade.php url I get the following error message:

So I re-downloaded the VB 3.8.1 today, unzipped it and went through the steps again as described on the support site, but get the same message.

What's the next step? Did I leave one out? I don't quite see how downloading the 3.8.1 version doesn't "run" it.

(I tried the first "click here" option, which didn't do anything. I didn't want to try the second one until I checked here first.)

    Edit:
Also, since downloading ver 3.8.1, I've gotten this email twice now:

Sorry, I couldn't delete the above post.

It's upgraded. Even though I thought I removed the install.php file from the install directory (it didn't show on the server), I went back and deleted it from the folder on my computer then re-uploaded the install folder and that seemed to have fixed it.
