Private message navbar problems

I just enabled private messaging and when i get a message and it shows that i have a message up the top right, when i click on it, it doesn't take me to the message when i believe it should give me a drop down menu detailing the messages.

There are several types of notifications. The PM notification is only one of those. If the PM notice is your only notification at the time then the welcome box will have a direct link to your PM area. If you have other types of notifications then that link turns into a popup menu that lists all notifications from which you can select.

If this isn't working for you then I suspect a style problem. Try to reproduce it on a default style:

Admin CP -> Styles & Templates -> Style Manager -> [Add New Style]

Create a new style with no parent. Then click that style's name in the Style Manager to view your forum with that style. If the problem goes away on the default style then you know it's a style problem at which point you need to systematically revert your custom templates to isolate the problem.
