upgrading to latest mySQL

We are currently running an older version of mySQL (4.1.22) and plan on upgrading to a more current version of mySQL.

Is there anything we should be aware of when upgrading the mySQL software, on the server end?

Backup, backup, backup

This way if the upgrade fails you have something to fall back on Otherwise pretty straight foward.
