Social Groups page not working in beta 3

I get this message when I try to access the Social Groups

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '&', expecting T_VARIABLE or '$' in /home/jilly/public_html/forums/includes/functions_socialgroup.php on line 1741

New posts search not working in beta 3

this also happens when I try the new posts button in beta 3
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '&', expecting T_VARIABLE or '$' in /home/jilly/public_html/forums/includes/functions_search.php on line 1046

Note - this happened after I removed the extra &'s mentioned by slave in the other post. If I go back to the default functions.php that has the 3 extra &'s, then nothing works.
