    3.8 Beta 3 functions.php broken...

I ran into this error, and have been banging my head against the wall for ages. Redownloading, reuploading e.t.c... I realised, there seems to be some kind of mistake in functions.php.

    Error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '&', expecting T_VARIABLE or '$' in /home/.../public_html/includes/functions.php on line 5883

There is an extra & symbol before $value, also on line 5891 and 5899. Removing them returns the board to operation.

I downloaded 3.8 Beta 3 package without images with vB branding removed. Not sure if other variations of the download are unaffected, as I could find no other threads with the same problem.

it would not let me into upgrade.php, but I removed the &'s on the lines slavetothename said, in front of the value, and then it allowed me to move forward and upgrade.

This is a big issue, they should state clearly in the beta 3 release post that php 5 was REQUIRED. I was running beta 2 on 4.4.8, and I can't get 5 as of right now.. this sucks...

Crap, I'm not sure what PHP version i'm running, if i require 5.x then i'm screwed til my host upgrades, if they plan on even doing so, because this really bites.

Reupload the functions.php from 3.8.0 Beta 2. You may not have some bug fixes but you should be able to get your forums back up and running.

The 3 simple edits solved it for me. For the record, I wasn't complaining... This is a beta afterall!

Hope the heads up helped. And glad you other guys found a solution.

Ah, cheers... I'd forgotten about Project Tools. I will check it out in future... Shame the search isn't integrated with the forum search as I would have found something before posting here.

                          Thanks Steve!

So if I want to upgrade from beta 2 to beta 3 on a server with php 4.4.9, I'll need to do this:

                            1. Upload the beta 3 files via FTP.
                            2. Appy the 2 patches in the link you posted.
                            3. Start the upgrade script.

                            Is that the correct order?

                            Thanks,
                            James
