Upgrading 3.8.7 from Patch Level 2

Am getting very confused here. I'm currently running vB 3.8.7 Patch Level 2 I have an email dated 14/03/14 telling me to update with a patch. On my control panel it states I need Patch Level 3 (or MAPI - don't have that) & a link to http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum...x-of-vbulletin

But when I look for patches there is now a Patch Level 4 which I've downloaded. My PHP version is 5.3.28.

Do I just upload all the files in the patch folder to my site (about 10 altogether) & overwrite the existing ones or do I need to upload anything else first?
Why does the announcement say Patch Level 3? Why not email about Patch Level 4 or mention on my Control Panel?

On 3.8.7 you can just upload the PL4 files to update.

What would be be better in the long term, would be to download the full 3.8.8 package, upload all of it, and run the upgrade script. This will give you php 5.4 compatibility so that if your host upgrades it your site won't break.

Thanks Mark. My host is about to upgrade to php 5.4 (around 20th Aug) but I'm about to go away so I'm intending to set the server to stay as PHP 5.3 for the moment. Then I'll investigate vB 3.8.8 as I'm not sure if it'll affect any of my plugins, templates etc. Assuming all OK I'll upgrade to vB 3.8.8 & php 5.4.

Does 3.8.8 run under php 5.3? How about php 5.5 as they will be offering that as well after the upgrades?

        Hi

Yes 3.8.8 will run fine under php 5.3.
3.8.8 itself won't break any plugins, the only issue might be if the plugins themselves are not php 5.4 compatible.
3.8.8 is not compatible with php 5.5 - however we do have a 3.8.9 Beta which provides this compatibility.
