Doing a big update from 3.0.6 to 3.8

Hey,

I found a backup of a site I lost years ago (Maybe around 2005/2006) and wanted to try get it back up and running.

The backup is just the full database backup but I know it was running on 3.0.6.

Can I simply upload the 3.0.6 files after downloading from vb.com, import the db backup to a new db then change the config to the database?
Can I just go through the normal updates if this works?

Thanks very much for any help

VB 3.8 upgrade.php should be able to upgrade from any VB 3.0.x version.

You would download the VB 3.8 files from the member's area, upload them to your server

Setup config.php to work with your database (always keep a safe backup of the datebase untouched)

And run the upgrade.php script as normal. it should work.

Thanks for the reply Joe.

Just went through the upgrade and it looks like everything was imported, except for the actual post content - Thread titles are there and linked to in the forums (Showing the view count and reply count) but there is no content for the thread or posts at all.

An example here: http://northwestsocial.com/hosting2/balearic/showthread.php?t=1918

If you look in the 'post' table, are there entries with a threadid of 1918?

No Trevor, it looks like a lot weren't imported for some reason, I didn't even think of looking in there.

I just tried one that does have a threadid and it is working

Anyone know why some of the threads wouldn't have imported?

Thanks

Sorry I didn't reply yesterday John, was travelling most of the day...

Can you open the backup file in a text editor and see if those threads exist OK in the backup file in case they haven't been backed up properly rather than it being an import problem. If they're there in the file, try restoring the backup to a new database and check the post table again

No problem, thanks Trevor.

Can you tell me what exactly I should search for in the sql?

I don't know the content of the thread so can't search for any words, not sure what else to go by.

Thanks again

Just search for the term '1340' as I wouldn't imagine there will be a huge number of references to that
