Here are the upgrade instructions in the manual:

Choose your current version from the drop-down menu on the top corner of the screen before you start.

A quick overview is-

BACKUP YOUR SITE BEFORE YOU START
Download the VB 3.8.7 package form the Members Area
Unzip It
Close your Forums
Upload all files in the upload directory to your server in whatever directory your old files were (Overwrite old files)
Delete the /install/install.php file
Browse to /install/upgrade.php, put in your customer # and run the script
Press Next/Continue until it finishes
Once it completes go to the Admin CP and revert the templates it tells you to in the Admin CP news area (Warning: reverting will lose customization.)
Open Forums
Check if modifications still work (if any)
Test everything
Open Forum
