trending module displays varying number of topics

On my homepage, the trending module displays 5 topics, but on other pages only 3 or 1 topic is displayed. Why is this? Is there a setting to set a fixed number of topics to be displayed?

Okay, I found the setting called "Number of results", and the value is 5. So why is 3 or 1 (sometimes 4) topics displayed on most pages?

EDIT: I chose the homepage as the source, and now the trending module displays exactly what is displayed on the homepage ie. 5 topics on all pages.

It isn't a standard search and it depends on your other settings. A channel may only have one trending topic. It may have none.
