statistics module not updating new registered user

The module is showing "Welcome to our newest member, xxxx". xxxx registered over 10 days.ago, and abc registered yesterday (about 24 hours ago).

Why is the statistics module not updating to welcome abc, when abc is the newest member?

I have found that the pagination goes according to the user confirming the email confirmation. If user A signs up 2 weeks ago but answers the confirmation after the next new user signs up, then user A won't show on the newest member list

I think something is going on. The module is still showing a user (xxxx, mentioned in the first post) who joined 3 weeks ago as the newest member, but 2 new users have registered since then.
