Is there a way to stop showing new user albums and posts there as well as visitor messages? There really is no reason for them to show up there and it just confuses people.

It's possible, but very tricky to do.
I have a pre-prepared string for Today's Posts that I use on my 5.1.4 demo site that excludes this type of thing (see sig).
