*sigh* I need some real help here guys.

Today while tring to upgrade to VBulletin 2.0 on Site5
it was slow and I was complaining...

well it seems that I took up 84 apache processes or something so they terminated my site....

even tho I have a 26 gig a month transfer limit that I didn't reach..

Does anyone know of reliable hosting for a fair price that won't kill me because I get a lot of hits?

How many concurrent users did you have when site5 kicked you?

I had like 8,458 page views in 4 days

I take up 84 apache processes and the others only take up 4

I don't know why this is happening its a nightmare.

              You have sent a message!
              Hi Elliot,
It's quite a coincidence that you emailed me today! We were able to locate the source of the problem. One of the users on the area51 server was using a TON (and I mean a TON) of resources. Take a look at this http process listing for yourself:
              root@area51 [~]# /scripts/userps
              arabiano: 3
              aroma: 2
              artpassi: 8
              blackgla: 3
              digaman: 3
              ebonyele: 6
              jough: 4
              joycean: 8
              legendof: 2
              olympus: 3
              realgame: 84
              terris: 2
              yourcgi1: 10

It is quite obvious from this listing that your account is using an extremely high number of http processes. Generally, we like to have our shared machines run at about 40-60 http processes. Your site ALONE was generating nearly twice the usual system resource usage that we try to maintain our shared servers - with well over 150 accounts - at.
As a result of this high usage, many of the services on this system were failing, and performance was greatly impaired (which is what you, and every other user on this system was noticing). Due to the fact that your account was causing such extreme service degradation to the rest of our clients on this server, we have suspended your account.
Please email me back with regards to finding a solution to this problem. Normally, I would suggest that you move to a medium to large sized dedicated system, however we have suspended new server signups at this time. The most sensible solution is for us to give you a refund for your unused time, and allow you to find a host that is more suitable to your needs.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to hearing your input, as we want to get your site back up and running just as much as you do!
              Best Regards,
              Matt Lightner

              Hi Matt,
today is Feb 13, 2001. I woke up at about 5a.m. to setup VB2.0 to find out that everything is incredibly slow and ended up blaming it on the software upgrade. Then later on I try to use the older version which was fast and that was extreemly slow also. Is your mySQL server backed up or what? I hope you can fix this soon because it is very important that I get things back to normal ASAP! Thanks

I don't know if I understood your response but did you go into the control panel, into update counters, and execute the Search Index rebuild? (alot of thread and post id's fly by, etc)..

Then I would suspect that is what caused your problems as it is very intensive. You can tell them that it is a one time only thing and won't happen again. If you have already completed it than you have no worries. If you still need to finish it than ask them nicely to let you.

that would cause all those processes for that long of a time period? why would it last so long?

The server had to recover from the abuse <inside infopop humor>

Tell them to reinstate your site as you don't have to run the search index again.

Your account had nearly killed the server once again (within 20 minutes of being unsuspended). It appears that your forums are one of the causes of your high server usage. Take a look for yourself. Note that there aren't too many processes yet, because we just unsuspended your account [again].

Matt sat and watched the Area 51 server overheat while I updated the counters on VB 1.1.3 about 6 months ago. I'd suggest telling him exactly what you were doing (and mention it's what hystersisters.com was doing when he had to tell me to hang on and wait 15 minutes before continuing), and see if he won't reinstate you. What kind of users are you getting on your board? I know when we were with Site5 we consistantly had about 25 users and as long as I didn't use the update counters/wasn't importing UBB info/wasn't allowing a "search all open forums", we did fine.
