Looking for a good dedicated host for a LARGE VB site...

Hi all - I run www.acuraworld.com and our current host has really been pissing me off lately. We're on a semi-dedicated server with about 10,000,000 hits a month, using 50G of data transfer per month, VB database ~ 500M. I'm looking for a new host, needless to say.

I've found two that are affordable that seem to be good:
    1. A+ hosting (http://www.aplushosting.com/english/...-rates-1.phtml_)
    2. Rack Shack (http://www.rackshack.net)
I'd like to get some experiences with either of those host if you have them, please limit it to how well they host a site of my size (or lack thereof? ).

I'm currently with www.www-hosting.net and I've been VERY patient with them for the past year, moving from one server to the next only to see them fill it with other customers exceeding their own posted limit of 30 per semi-dedicated server. Their customer support is good once you get someone to respond to a TT (12 hours or more sometimes), but is abysmal because the owner is out of alaska so he's 5 hours behind. If you live on the east coast, this sucks because at 9am when your site is down, you may have to wait 5 hours to get it back.

As of late, the straw that broke this camel's back was that they did maintenance AT 3:00PM EST!!!! They re-arranged their cabinets DURING A WEEKDAY AT 3:00PM!!!!!! My peak time is 1pm-5pm EST so that didn't sit very well with me.

    Thanks in advance,

    Schuyler

Whoa - well, mark them off the list.

      And add another: http://www.cihost.com/?zone=products...d_hosting_unix

A fellow VB admin that hosts www.audiokarma.org uses them with no problems. The only issue I see is that their level 0 server uses an AMD processor.

CIHOST? Are you damn crazy or what?
Just go to webhostingtalk and run a search there, you'll be amazed.
        Look, try www.venturesonline.com, or www.prioritycolo.com.

Ah - see though their name is banned there so it makes it hard to do a search on em. Knowing that now, I can avoid them like the plague.

Well, the 50 GB of data transfer isnt much, but thats a HUGE db for 50 GB transfer...

I would suggest either a) Finding someone that specializes in High-Bandwidth / Usage sites, or b) get a dedicated server (or more then one if your site is big enough) and have someone manage it for you (unless you know how to manage a linux server, and optimize it for vb / a big site). Rackshack isnt bad, but dont expect great bandwidth, its fine for hosting sites on, not very good for gameservers and such that depend on ping times... If you need someone to run your server(s) for you, feel free to send me a PM and I'll give ya some info.

Ok - so after looking at ventures and priority, the only thing I have left to ask is does anyone here have personal experience running their VB site with them?

And nuno, thanks for the replies man. I'd rather not get stuck with another tier3, mom-and-pop shop that doesn't know the value of a growing website.

Oh - and I don't care about managed hosting. I'm a 9 year UNIX admin myself (ran Linux 1.2.5 way back in 94) so I don't need an expensive GUI to run my server.

              Thanks.

This forum (vB) is running from a Ventures Online dedicated server, and many other vB's too. I just moved recently and their connectivity/bandwidth is excellent. It's quite expensive though, but you get what you pay for

I have used CIHost. I have had many probelms with them. My domain got shut down for too much bandwidth, despite the fact that my plan had unlimited. THey said that I was using 35GB of bandwidth, so I asked them to check the access logs, and they found only my IP. They didn't know what was going on. In fact I got my mothly credit card statement and they charged me $50 for the bandwidth. Which reminds me, I need to call them.

I ended up with prioritycolo.com and can say that Myles there has exceeded my expectations and then improved on that! I ordered my server Friday and it was ready Saturday! I would strongly suggest them to anyone - their server pricing is very competetive (Celeron 1.7, 512MB RAM, 40G 7200 IDE disk, 1/2 Mbps for $100), and so far the service is stellar. Go with prioritycolo and stay AWAY from www.www-hosting.net!
