I was with them for a while and somehow they lost ALL my files and database information. All GONE! They don't know what happened and are very sorry.
Months of work and money down the tubes.

The exact same thing happened to me when I was with HR. However they did manage to finally find my files after they were 'missing' for 39 hours.

Are they making you any kind of offer? Couldn't some kind of action be taken legally?

You won't be able to take legal action, no host (or very, very, very few) guarantees the backups taken of data.

First of all I'm sorry to hear about your loss, nothing ever good comes out of a situation like this not for the host nor the hostee. Yes Karl is correct, as you will not be allowed to take legal action against most hosts as they usually have a stipulation in their terms for this sort of thing. That is why you should always make backups of your sites yourself and never rely on anyone but yourself to do this. I backup my db's 2 times a day with cron jobs, then I download it to my local computer just so if this sort of thing happens, I have covered my basis. Although this is a tough lesson to be learned, this should theoretically never happen again to you if you have backups.

I feel for you.

VO lost my 6700 member and 297,000 post message board this past February. So I definitely feel for you.
On a bit of a semi-little-microscopic good note, they did give me 3-months free hosting.

Anyway, I have gained back 2500 members back in only 3 months.
And I see it as being better to lose the members the 6700 members and learn the lesson to backup. Rather then have 10,000 members and still to this day, never have been able to or want to backup my database. Who knows, I could have continued down my route of not backing up, and lost 20k members some day.

So the lesson has been learned. And never will this happen to me again. And I hope your issue is resolved. If not, look at it, the way I have. It could have been worse.

yeah, i have a friend on hostrocket.com - he always has problems with them being down, having troubles with the SQL server for no reason........not gonna go with them if i get myself hosting...

I would add I'm a Hostrocket customer and particularly for the price you can't really complain, given the bandwidth allowance and facilities and I would add that they do provide a daily backup for each customer that you should really download fairly regularly to your own PC as a precaution.

There are a number of free scripts that via a Cron job, could be used to mail or FTP your files and your database backups to you each day or each week.

I would add that if they were unable to recover your files/database that is fairly shocking... Was this on a server within the new datacentre or the old one?

Ack! Don't say that!

I left my previous Host for VO after a hacker busted in to our virtual server(provided by RackShack). Rack Shack would not let our Host manager get to any of the backups(the one he did the previous MONTH!!!) so everyone on that server lost EVERYTHING.

Yep, I am equally to blame as I did not do my own local backups. Ouch, that was a VERY painful lesson! Now I am at VO and haven't had a problem in the several weeks since I have been with them.

I know have a CRON job running a backup script of my MySQL databases and then e-mails them to me. I also have a backup script that runs twice a day that backs up my Public_HTML directory.

Each morning I FTP the lastest copies of my database and file backups to local hard drive. I tell you, that is a good feeling knowing that all my bases are covered now.

hostrocket isn't that bad, you just should make backups regulary (database, all [bz2 compressed] files), no matter your host
