Options for dedicated server eg RAQ4 please

Lets assume I need a dedicated UNIX server for my large and busy VB or UBB site.

I see lot of Cobalt RAQ4 dedicated hosting offers which look suitable.

I need 15GB bandwidth per month at least. How much RAM - 128 MB or 256 MB?

Does anyone have good or bad comments about running VB or UBB on a Cobalt RAQ4 server?

Can someone suggest a good hosting company? (UK or US) - one I have seen:

    http://www.cobaltrack.com $199 pm for a RAQ4 with 55 GB pm bandwidth (wow!).

    Any help gratefully received.

One issue - RAQ4s seem to come with Interbase SQL server as the default and not MySQL but
I assume one can install MySQL easily enough?

Everything I've heard about the Raq's is that they are terrible for dynamically generated pages, ie cgi, php, etc. I wouldn't run ONE UBB or vB on a Raq, let alone more than that.

From what i understand, if you install any program that cobalt dosnet support (mySQL) it will void your warente with them, you may want to check into the linux servers at catalog.com, they may be in your price range.

Yes, you lose software support if you use Telnet!

However it comes with PHP and MySQL installed (at http://www.cobaltrack.com)

I can't understand why it is so bad at CGI - surely it is just a PC in a small box?

I might also use it to host some virtual servers at the same time.

catalog.com charge $214 for a Linux server which is close - anyone managed to get anything
as good for $200 pm or less?

http://www.cobaltrack.com charge $99 for 2 months then $199 - no set up for RAQ4 hard to beat the price.

          Exactly:

Never ever ever use one of these machines

I've never heard of anyone be able to run a UBB successfully.

RAQ servers are not just small PCs, they are "web appliances".... basically they are optimized for server http pages, and are made to be easy to administer via a web browser interface. I would highly recommend against using a RAQ server if you are planning on running CGI (Perl and/or PHP) or any databases (MySQL).

Well thanks for the warning about RAQ servers.

What sort of experiences have people had with http://www.catalog.com as this seems the best place to get a ordinary Linux server?

RackSpace, DellHost, and DN are your best bets.
