Total Hosting Newbie - Please Help!

    Hello!

I'm looking into purchasing a vBulletin license to run a small online roleplaying community and I'm at a bit of a loss about how to get started. I've been on the user and moderator side of things before and I really liked using vBulletin, but I don't have any experience starting my own website. I realize the first thing that I need to do is figure out the hosting situation, which is why I've come to this forum for some friendly advice.

Our community will be very small, no more than 20 users online at a time (not counting guests and wandering search engines), and I expect we'll only manage half of that consistently. Will a forum that small work well on shared hosting? As I've browsed around this forum I've seen that many people use VPS hosting, but I don't really know enough about hosting to know if we'll need something like that. I'd also like to start up a small MediaWiki to keep track of content once the game is up and running, so I'd imagine that might factor into the hosting decision as well.

Since I'm on a budget, the current shared hosting promotions at FatCow and HostGator look really tempting, but I want to check and make sure that vBulletin will be compatible with those options. Sorry to be such a clueless newb... Can anyone help me figure out what will work best?

10 to 20 active users should be fine on any halfway-decent shared hosting account- VPS would not be needed in your situation.

I understand budget is a concern but in my experience hosting really is a place where you get what you pay for- a Good/quality host will mean few, if any errors or issues when using the forums. Cheap hosts oversell their servers which lead to overloaded servers, database errors, and more problems then you need.

I've yet to find the good and cheap vBulletin host myself.

Out of the two, I will recommend Hostgator. They are okay, generally good customer support and good uptime even though server can be slow at times. One of the better options when cost is an issue.

Compatibility is not an issue, almost all PHP hosts can host VB. VPS etc are not needed at all, it is too expensive and too much effort to even manage the server. Shared hosting is the right solution for you.

Liquidweb is one good option, if you don't mind paying some more. As Joe mentioned, cost and quality have an inverse relation, even though there are exceptions.

URLJet is specialist VB hosting, ideal for people like you who have no technical skill. Again, there are not the cheapest, but worth a look.

Cheap is relative. I'd rather not have the headaches that come with the likes of HostGator. BlueHost is $24.99 a month and worth every penny of it.

$24.99 is about the price of shared hosting on URLJet where I have my sites.

Totally agree, you will approach the VPS quality hosting, you will of course only be a qualified employee who will administer your server. And the outcome of geography provider that was convenient to cooperate with him and had no problems with the SEO.
