Will this be managed or unmanaged?

For the most part unmanaged - would just want some help with the initial set-up. Afterwards I may want some management but I'd be willing to up my budget then.

Then what I'd suggest to you is to get an unmanaged VPS. You'd get untold resources for half your budget. You could then pay someone 20$ or so to setup your VPS and get it all running and pay someone for adhoc tasks.

The budget isn't the biggest issue, I prefer a bit of management with great uptime/set-up/monitoring/24hr-support. Is there anyone you can suggest?

I personally think managed is a bit of a waste because once set up there's not much monitoring involved unless you have someone constantly targetting or trying to hack you/your site.

You might want to try wiredtree. However, you'd get 2/3x more resources on unmanaged and hiring support as and when needed.

Is this for your wonderfulwaterloo? If so, the size of that site you should be perfectly fine on shared hosting.

Give cloudaccess.net a try. They have a dedicated server that won't go down on you. They even have an awesome sign up your mates program and they use joomla software which is open source software and free.
So for under $50 you have a great site and an awesome customer service support crew that help you out by answering everything that you need within half an hour.

If you are looking for offers, may be webhostingtalk is a better place. Better known VPS hosts here, like wiredtree would be a lot more expensive. So better look for self managed VPS in WHT.
