Wanting to choose a VPS for vB4 (maybe vB5 later on) but dunno which

I've been thinking of getting another vB4 license, but the problem is that I don't know which VPS hosting to choose..

What I know is that the site will be popular, with an estimated user base between 50 to 1000 users daily (not accurate) with quite a few posts daily as well. It might become more popular later on. The problem is... What VPS should I choose? How many RAM? How many cores (CPU). And should I do it managed, or unmanaged?

I assume even if I would choose unmanaged, I can easily install my own Control Panel.

    Help is appreciated.

Seems to be a UK based, I was more thinking of a USA VPS server. It might be slower for me, seeing I'm in the NL. But it'll be cheaper seeing it will be dollar based.

Cost/performance thing. I would always say speak to Tim though and see what he come up with, and compare that against what you can get US-wise.
Performance and service is key to me, which is why I stick with Tim. You can always get cheaper but.....I've been there! Never again.

Could you also tell me what the difference is between cloud hosting and the rest?

I've been hearing that VPS's aren't that great with databases depending on the speed of the HDD as well. With a friend of saying this to me:
At work, I once witnessed first-hand what happens if you virtualize database servers. It wasn't good. It's important to either have a fast enough disk or enough RAM to hold everything in-memory all the time.
And going higher in RAM and possibly choosing a SSD VPS server might go higher in price as well.

All VPSes aren't created equal, depends on the VPS node hardware used, how it's configured settings wise and how many folks share that VPS node as well as what type of virtualisation implemented, OpenVZ, KVM, Xen, Virtuozzo, VMWare etc etc.

I've had no problems with my own and clients' vB forums on VPSes provided they're optimally configured

Of course disk I/O performance and speed is dependent on the above mentioned factors as well

Only select unmanaged, if you know your way around ssh/telnet and linux command line, otherwise managed is only choice.

Nice read at http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=94843. My personal opinion http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/s...3&postcount=22 and why I use wiredtree http://vbtechsupport.com/wiredtree_webhosting/

I am seriously thinking of moving to the wiredtree hybrid service to host my VB forum. Anyone here using wiredtree's hybrid option already?

I moved to VPS from shared hosting. The flexibility to install caching methods and tweaking the webserver to bleeding edge lightning speed performance is much more appealing than shared hosting.

If you want unmanaged, go with prometeus.net they are Italian based but if you tweak the webserver, mysql server, install caching methods etc no one will notice a thing. As mentioned above though, if you do not know your way around CLI managed might be your only option

Since you are looking for a VPS, Liquidweb and Wiredtree and two obvious choices. 1GB RAM should be good enough for up to 1000 users per day. You can always upgrade without much delay, so no need to start with very high configurations.

Give www.urljet.com a call... they specialize in vBulletin, and will give you a quote on what you need. They may look pricey but, if you are after custom hosting they tend to suit your needs, whatever you're after.
