    Hosting Help

We've been up and running on dreamhost shared for 7 years. Our growth has gone hand in hand with (imho) their decline. While we have the full license, we're just running the forum.

We have around 700 active users, 50 users concurrent, a database of 1gb (440k posts), and monthly bandwidth of around 25gb. Do we need a VPS? If so how much of one?

Not really, good shared hosting should be able to handle 150 or so conncurrent users.

Really? Hostgator shared for those stats? They would throttle that right away.

50 users at a time should be a little too much for shared hosting, but you can't really say with all overselling these days. Many shared hosts allow sites till a point where they are too big for VPS. Hostgator recommends VPS for root access and shared hosting customer when outgrow are recommended to move to dedicated servers. Considering that, I guess you can try shared hosting first and be prepared to move to a VPS if needed. Hostgartor will automatically move site to a VPS, so buying a VPS and moving to it should be really fast without much down time, in case needed. Try your luck!
