Server Processor Help

  • Server Processor Help

    I recently order a server with [Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz] processor.
    But when I check Server information under Cpanel. I see speed way less that 2.53GHz
    take a look:

    Is that thing okay? Because its not even close to 2.53GHz..
    Please advise.

    Yeah that doesn't seem right, It should show it correctly you might of got the wrong server setup or they ripped you off.

      well, I just spoke with them and this is what they said:
      "This is due to speed step technology. The processor will drop clock speed unless the server requires it. This is to conserve power and lessen wear and tear. I can confirm your processor is correct."

      I have no idea, how much of that is true.
      Can someone please advise?

        What he says is true about Intel SpeedStep. (your processor info page - Indicates that your processor does have this feature)

            They probably did, I don't think they would go so far as to fake your server info stats. Everything you listed was accurate for the model displayed.

              I don't know though it seems fishy because I have more than a dozen of these servers and I don't see this nor have I heard of it.

                That technology has been around for a long time and is legitimate. You can view a list of all Intel products that carry it, which I'm willing to bet some [intel based] servers you have carry it as well...

                Stepping down power (when it's not needed) on a couple thousand servers saves a ton in electrical expenditures.

                    It's pretty included on everything these days.

                    If your processor is on this list: (XEON Proc. w/ SpeedStep) http://ark.intel.com/MySearch.aspx?s...AE%20Processor -- then it has SpeedStep technology. (The entire 34xx series has it.)

                      I have a bunch of the 3440 servers, and none of them are showing what his is showing, I don't think he got what he paid for, if we have the same model/cpu why would his show way different speeds in cpanel?

                        No idea what configuration you are using. But...

                        SpeedStep started being supported in the 2.6 linux kernel. Depending on the flavor of server, I believe you can control it in the BIOS and at the software level in the energy settings. In your example, either you have it disabled or your system is under load.

                        This is pretty common stuff with Intel processors. It just all depends on how it's utilized in your system configs. Either way, for the OP, there's no reason to run a server a full power if it's not being fully utilized.

                        Editorial Note: I noticed in some of the Intel documents that this can also be referred to "Demand Based Switching (DBS)". (Depending on the BIOS/Hardware mfg.)

                          Yes but I don't see the reason that it would hurt even if it's running at full power 24/7 unless you are paying for power, I would think it would actually create lag having to start out low and grow for more power, although I've never looked into this so I don't know exactly how it works.

                          I just still don't see why his is running lower and mine is running at full power.

                          I'm running centos.

                            It does not hurt performance, but in overall metrics, enhances performance. Demand Based Switching / SpeedStep works asynchronously with the processor's demands, and supports it as and when required.

                              Yes but don't you think it would create a sort of lag, to go from 1 for example, to go to 2, unlike if 2 was already there..
