I bought a $9.95 year one and went with them for about 7 months before leaving it, great support and not really much down time. However I will never go with them again, they charged me twice on my credit card for services I didn't sign up for. They agreed it was a mistake but couldn't refund me my money in full, they could only add it to my account hosting which I thought was a joke. Beware of the cost after the first year. I think its something like $140 they will charge you for a second year.

I am with Hawk Host and have been since early February and no problems what so ever, I think I will be sticking with them for a long time.

I went with Liquidweb and an very sorry that I did.

Their PHP Maximum file download size is ONLY 2M. And they will NOT change it!
So if you have DownloadsII installed, your users cannot upload anything larger than 2M, which is VERY small.

It sucks! And they want to sell you a smartserver for $60 in order to get the limit lifted!

        Nelson

PS. One thing I will say for Liquidweb in fairness- they have a solid 30 day return guarantee policy, and they honor it. They returned my money in full! Kudos to you guys for that!

          Hostgator

So many negative posts here about Hostgator - surprise!! this one is a thumbs-up.
I was terrified of using Hostgator due to all the bad reviews in this thread, when I recently relocated my forum to a new URL AND a new host, but the move was prompted by financial issues and Hostgator was less than $4USD per month on a 2-year commitment, so I swallowed hard, paid for just one month at the higher rate to begin with, and set up a test forum on their server. I was pleasantly surprised with the results, subsequently went live and signed up for the 2 year hosting package. (I had to contact them to request the rate, since I started out monthly, but they were happy to help me out.)
So far, so GOOD, on all levels. I can't speak to their past performance, but I am extremely pleased with the current service I am receiving for my 3.8.6 board running vbAdvanced CMPS and PostPro Gallery as well as many mods, so I thought I'd come back here and say so for anyone else contemplating this same leap.

            HOSTATOM.NET - BUYER BEWARE!!

Worst experience of my life was on HostAtom.net after Liquidweb. 33 year old Kevin Lally of Lexington Mass owns it, and when he saw my thread on here about Liquidweb, he solicited me in a PM. That should have been my first clue, he solicits customers on here.

From day one on his VPS server, nothing went right. He's in business 1 year and a half, has a post office box for an address, and probably runs it out of his parents house.

The server kept spiking and shutting down, with almost no load. He kept blaming the problems on either 2 dormant wordpress sites or the chatbox addon I downloaded off here.

Then he tried to hold me up for another $240 for more RAM. I lost half of my users and traffic. When I asked for a refund of the $480 in prepayments for the year I made, he refused to refund anything, citing his TOS.

When I went to Paypal and complained, he retaliated by terminating my account, and blocked my IP address from even accessing his site.

So now I have neither a refund or the service, and am out $480. Kevin seems to think that is how to treat people fairly.

YOU judge for yourself. Whatever you do, check out the TOS on these hosts, find out how long they are in business, where they operate from, and what happens if their service is NOT satisfactory. Do they stand behind it, like Liquidweb did, when they refunded my money in full, or do they kick you off and keep your money, like Kevin M. Lally did.

Godaddy, avoid like the plague. Their mail relayers have been blacklisted for weeks. No end in sight - no alternatives offered, no removal of the block on port 25 so users can send from their own servers. I gave up in the end and moved to servint, all good so far.

In October 2011 HG set up an arrangement for my forum that they said would be more than adequate, indefinitely. Recently (8 months later) they decided that one routine weekly burst on my forum is a capacity problem of some kind for them (the weekly email notifications - I've since turned those off.) Instead of pro-actively letting me know so we could work out a solution before it was a problem to both of us, they simply shut down my forum, no warning. This has happened twice in 2 weeks and each time it has taken HOURS (7 hours last time) to get the forum back online. There have been no significant changes in the forum, there is gradual growth but the forum is only a few percent larger than it was when this arrangement was begun.

Their communications has been inconsistent and not always that professional. There seems to be no management, no captain on the ship, to work with to get the right arrangement for my forum. It is just one support shift after another reacting to whatever they see at that moment. They don't tell me what they are doing. When the forum is down it is sometimes extremely hard to get a response or action. Their chat and phone support will sometimes lie about what is happening.

I've been with HG for 5 years, and have experience good, bad and indifferent service at various times. They seem to have improved a great deal ... until all this came up.

Shopping for a different host. I can't do business with a host that communicates by shutting my site down. I need them to manage their business with me, not just leave it to some support shift people to react to server stuff with little regard to the impact on the customer.

In general we were fairly satisfied with them (about 5 years) except that they had a tendency to turn our website off for no apparent reason and then they could never explain why they did. Also, they were unable to distinguish a spoofed ddos attack from an actual one. One the surface it appeared to be a random Eastern European ddos attack but actually it originated from a single server IP in Australia. Even I could figure that out an I'm a complete noob so we changed. If you have a small website and you keep your nose wiped then HG might work well for you.
