    UK hosting recommendations

I need to find a decent UK host for a highly modified board.

The member base is in the UK, and, because of some of the content, it will need to be managed under UK law.

At the moment we have from 20 to 70 users online at any given time. We have at least 100 people logging in during the day with up to 700 posts per day. This is for a forum that is about 6 months old.

Some pages execute about 18-22 SQL queries (portal pages mainly) ... There are also a few scheduled tasks etc.

We currently use about 10-20 gigs of data transfer per month. We are growing all the time ... so all this may double within the next year.

Our current (shared) host (UKhost4U) is already telling us that we're starting to overload the server, so this is what I'm guessing we need.
    • Some sort of control panel allowing multiple domains (cpanel/plesk etc). This is so we can clone the site before changing the dns settings. Also, none of us really know about configuring a server so web based control panel would make life so much simpler.
    • Must be able to handle an active forum nicely, without any problems.
    • The terms of service must allow a degree of 'adult' content ... We're definitely not porn, but discussions can contain adult topics and we don't want to fall foul of restrictions because of what someone posts.
    • It has to be affordable ... We are a free unsupported site and none of us can afford to pay huge dedicated server costs, but we can possibly stretch to a reasonably priced VPS solution.
    Any recommendations would be great

    Hi

I've been with three different UK hosts and moved to one in Florida and the service is excellent.

I have no doubts that US hosting is fantastic. I'm looking for a good UK host for legal reasons.

can you be a little more specific? We wont be able to give you recommendations until we know which webhost can accomodate your "legal reasons"

The site in question is UK based, with a 95% UK membership and all UK based admins/mods ... Therefore, no matter where we host the site, we are subject to UK law ... and we would possibly be subject to laws governing the export of data (UK data protection act) etc.

The main legal issue would be that we have a forum dedicated to discussion on recreational drug use. (Nothing that allows dealing or promotion), but as far as I am aware there are issues relating to incitement that could land us in trouble.

Apart from this, we cover other potentially contentious issues such as anti-war protest, politics, animal rights, religion, sexuality ...

We moderate what members post to keep us within UK law, we wouldn't want to them to be answerable to any international laws when we didn't need to. If anything we want to be less restrictive, not more.

We know where we stand with UK law, we don't want to go learn a whole new set of rules just because of the location of the server ... Although I guess we could possibly use a host in some of the more liberal EU countries such as Scandinavia or the Netherlands.

Hostway is UK based and okay. If you need dedicated, 1and1 is okay.
