    comment on this dedicated server

I have been offered a dedicated server for $99 a month.

this is what i will get

A server we can do without a setup fee would be an Athlon64 3400+, with 1GB and 120GB HDD. for $99/mo. includes 1500 gigs of bandwidth on any of our three networks (Yes! Including our Premium Bandwidth!) And all on 100Mbps Ports! Adding Cpanel/WHM with Fantastico is just $20/mo.

We include up to 8 IPs with each server, all usable.

Our servers come with remote reboot for emergencies, but you can also have us paged if you need a reboot quickly.

I asked if it was managed,(it is not) he said -
Cpanel would take care of installing MySQL and probably everything you would need (Apache, PHP, mail system, etc.).

I can have it on Theplanet, Yipes or HE
    *** Test IPs ***
    216.66.18.1 (HE.net)
    209.120.238.1 (Yipes)
    69.41.253.1 (The Planet)
Which one do you think I should get it on?

This will be my first time on a dedicated server. Are they hard to manage? Should I ask any other questions?

    Thanks

Personally I'd say that was cheap for a dedicated server... perhaps too cheap. Pay peanuts, get monkeys...

This is where I got it from http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=495345 I contacted him and this is what he has offered me.

Does anyone think this may be a good deal?

You get what you pay for so I would proceed with caution. Best bet is to find a reliable host with a long and solid reputation. Hosts with a good reputation offering $99 servers is ok, but some host out of the blue.. I wouldn't touch it. My host has a forum on their site for it's customers which shows they have nothing to hide and they have a history of working hard to ensure their customer base is happy. There's nothing worse than getting a lemon host so good luck and choose wisely..

I would recommend going with the one on ThePlanet, for the number of dedicated boxes they rent, I've heard relatively fewer grumbles about them. But I am surprised you're getting that rate for a box on their network.

Is that guy a reseller ?

i have changed my mind, and decided to go with http://hostforweb.com/dedicated_servers.html because they offer support with a managed dedicated sever.

I have been really happy with there pre sales support and questions. I have just negotiated with them to see if i can get double the ram for free. If so and everything goes well, ill let everyone know how they go. I have read so many things over at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/index.php and they have mostly been very positive for them.

I'm thinking of purchasing a control panel like directadmin, is that a good choice?

I have never even heard of hostforweb but I have heard of TMS. I would've gone with TMS if I had to choose between the two. You could've gotten support/managed services with pretty much any dedicated server through a third party.

Read post #27 in that thread. Someone isn't getting a good response time it looks like.

Yeah, they got back to me, I now have 1 gig of ram for no extra. its always important to negotiate and work with your host to get a plan that suits you. I'm going to be going with no control panel, and see how i go, if that is no good, I will try a free control panel, then go with direct admin, they also have a 30 day money back if i dont like it, so I have options over the month.

Are they going to do the migration for you ? Make sure you have compatible MySQL versions or you're going to have a hell of a time editing a 900 MB file if your current version is relatively older than the one your new host is running.

In any event... Good luck with it all

They will update any software like mysql for free and they will help me get my database up for free. If it dont go well, they have a 30 day money back guarantee no questions asked, lets hope i dont need to use i tho.

The problem right now is choosing the OS im thinking of centos, freebsd or debian.

Im new to linux/unix so i want one that will be fairly easy to manage my self, which has good tutes around the place. Any ideas?

                          Thanks

sounds like they are switched on...

OS-wise... I've used both Fedora and CentOS, personally didn't have a problem with either. However CentOS seemed lighter / quicker to run, however there are load issues with a certain Kernel version.

                            See this thread - http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=171071

as for tutorials, just buy a book for the OS you choose or sign up with support forums online (there are a ton of those) and usually pretty friendly. But if you are getting a managed dedicated server, you shouldn't be too concerned with server issues

I have now paid, i selected centOS 4.3 They are setting up my server as we speak.

I am really thinking of getting Direct admin

Has anyone had experience with Direct admin? http://www.directadmin.com/

If I get it I'm going to get the montly licence for $29 see if i like it and if it works well on the server etc. If i like it i will then get a refund and get - Lifetime License: $299.00 (one-time, no recurring charges)

I think it is a good option, alot of people have recommended it, but if anyone has used it let me know of any problems you had.

                              THanks
