    PHP 5.0.0 Beta 1 Released

    Source: PHP.net
[29-Jun-2003] The PHP development community is proud to announce the release of PHP 5 Beta 1. Both source packages, and a Windows build are available in the Downloads Section. A list of changes can be found in the ChangeLog file.

Some of the more major changes include:

    * PHP 5 features the Zend Engine 2. For a list of Zend Engine 2 changes, please visit this webpage.
    * XML support has been completely redone in PHP 5, all extensions are now focused around the excellent libxml2 library (http://www.xmlsoft.org/).
    * SQLite has been bundled with PHP. For more information on SQLite, please visit their website.
    * Streams have been greatly improved, including the ability to access low-level socket operations on streams.
    * Due to issues surrounding the MySQL 4.0 license, the MySQL are no longer bundled with PHP. For more information on these licensing changes, please refer to the MySQL Licensing Policy.

Note: This is a beta version. It should not be used in production or even semi-production web sites. There are known bugs in it, and in addition, some of the features may change (based on feedback). We encourage you to download and play with it (and report bugs if you find any!), but please do not replace your production installations of PHP 4 at this time.

You do know you can't use it with vB unless you find and compile your own MySQL libraries?

I'm giving the new OOP features a whirl at the moment

You can't use the libraries that come with MySQL?

--with-mysql=/path/to/mysql <-- Technically illegal unless you own a commercial MySQL license.

Windows snapshots now contain the MySQL extension, however, there is only 1 successful build so far which has it, and it fails on load.

                  Why is that illegal?

I thought MySQL was free unless you are using it commercially.

I am trying to install it after just downloading it from snaps.php.net

When apache tries to load it just stops and up pops up a windows error saying the program has to stop. The logs all point to php4ts.dll

Does not work as CGI or as a module

Anyone found a solution for it yet?

                        2. Free use for those who never copy, modify or distribute
As long as you never distribute (internally or externally) the MySQL Software in any way, you are free to use it for powering your application, irrespective of whether your application is under GPL or other OSI approved license or not.
I think most of us are covered under this.

PHP is not GPL and not OSI approved so in theory should pay to distribute the client libraries.

Sooo... what's different about the OOP in PHP5 than PHP4?
